Living history with Fieldstaffs and the Victorians...

March 12, 2014 Jim Field

We love history here at Fieldstaffs, and lots of our regular customers are involved in local living history groups; Rochester has regular festivals where people take to the streets in historical costume. Very often visitors to the shop will be surprised to see Victorians rubbing shoulders with veterans from WW1 & WW2. Surrounded by authentic artefacts on a regular basis, we're always keen to use them to help educate young people about British history.

Over the years we've helped the children of our local school St Andrews, with their history lessons. Their year 2  were studying the Victorians recently, so with help from some of our lovely customers and the local museum,  46 children were able to spend the afternoon with Queen Victoria and her royal entourage!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, they asked loads of very pertinent questions and their enthusiasm and touching thank you notes made it  all worth while.

A huge thank you to our friends Eve Luck (Queen Victoria) Barrie Luck (John Brown) Dawn & John Howard (The Tsar & Tsarina of Russia) and Nick Baines (Colour Sergeant Bourne) who made it such an enjoyable afternoon, not just for the children, but for us here at Fieldstaffs. Also to the Guildhall Museum for a truly fantastic venue (they do weddings there as well!!)

We just can't wait till next time!

Yesterday some of the goodies we've had in the shop ended up in a series of photo editorials taken by a group of our friends at the local University for the Creative Arts. Here's just a selection of some of their work! Come and pay us a visit and see what treasures you can find!

Have a lovely weekend folks!

It's new window display time at Fieldstaffs, and this month we've gone for a guys down the pub theme! This gives us an opportunity to give you a taster of our excellent stock of breweriana, as well as playing cards, tankards, cravats, boys stuff and much more. We've always got a ton of this stuff, and there's still plenty in store for the girls! Keep your eyes peeled for what we've got in store for March!
Come and grab your tankard, a smashing tweed get-up and fight off the February chill in the most British of ways!

We love our local history here at Fieldstaff Antiques which is why we couldn’t resist this big batch of Rainham Pottery! Originally called Roeginga Pottery, thought to be a variation of the Anglo-Saxon word for Rainham, Rainham pottery was running from 1936 to 1975. The firm even patented their own specific shade of “Rainham Blue” which appeared on a lot of their, primarily domestic, pieces. First up we have this delightful 1960s tea set, and two dishes. Message us for more information/ prices.
